Garmin has launched a fitness smartwatch dubbed Vivoactive 3 in India. The American brand is popular for its GPS devices, so it is no surprise that the Vivoactive 3 packs in a location chip.

Locking horns with FitBit, Garmin’s smartwatch comes with health and activity tracking features. It has wrist-based heart-rate sensor. It comes with over 15 preloaded GPS and indoor activity modes to track running, swimming, and even yoga. Workouts need motivations. The Vivoactive 3 lets you compete with other Garmin users on the network. This free online community lets you join challenges via social media.

MR PORTER’S BEST WATCHES OF 2016

At two big Swiss trade fairs at the start of each year (January’s SIHH in Geneva, and Baselworld in March), the watch industry unveils the goodies in the pipeline for the 12 months ahead. Mr Benoit Mintiens, the Belgian product designer behind Ressence, has reimagined what a mechanical watch can be. His new Type 5 is a diving watch that can, unlike normal divers, be read underwater from any angle. This is possible because the dial is oil-filled (it’s the air inside a normal watch that produces the mirror reflections that bedevil divers who need to check their timing). The oil also assists the smooth and regular movement of the unique hour, minute, second and temperature hands. This is a seriously impressive watch that must be seen to be believed. Design-wise, there is nothing else like it.

NOMOS TETRA NEOMATIK

Designed for: The Aesthete

Nomos, from Glashütte in Germany, is a baby among the venerable watch brands who show at Baselworld – it was founded in 1990. Free from the kind of history that sometimes seems to constrict the older brands, Nomos has created an instantly recognisable minimalist design language that’s much imitated but rarely bettered, and with the introduction of the Tetra Neomatik that language has been extended to take in a square case. No less important, however, is the fact that the watch’s DUW 3001 movement is produced in-house.

CARTIER MECHANICAL LEGENDS CRASH SKELETON WATCH

If the big Swiss brands can sometimes seem a little too rational, trust the French to come up with something esoteric. The first, 1967 incarnation of the Crash was inspired by a damaged Baignoire Alongée timepiece, and only a few hundred were made. The watch is now back, and looks even more radical in the current skeletonised form, thanks in part to the way the numerals appear to be melting. Don’t let the eye-catching design distract from the quality of the hand-finished 9618 MC in-house movement.

ORIS CARL BRASHEAR LIMITED EDITION

Designed for: The Old-Schooler

Following the introduction of last year’s well-received Divers Sixty-Five, Oris has clearly seen the potential in producing vintage-inspired watches. This year’s novelty is a bronze version of the Divers Sixty-Five, created in honour of the legendary African-American Navy diver Mr Carl Brashear. Mr Brashear’s lifelong display of physical and moral bravery in the face of great adversities was immortalised by Mr Cuba Gooding Jr. in the 2000 movie Men Of Honor, and the watch’s bronze case (which will develop a notable patina over time) is a reference to the bronze diving helmets worn by Mr Brashear.

Watch visionary Mr Gérald Genta’s extraordinary 1970 design for Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak is genuinely iconic in the watch world. The original Royal Oak looks dainty next to this 44mm behemoth, which has a futuristic design that transcends the late Mr Genta’s work. However, its powerful form belies the nature of the movement, which is a minute repeater, as well as a chronograph and a tourbillon. The market for vintage steel chronographs is currently red hot, and Zenith’s famous El Primero movement hasn’t just been the most accurate chronograph since its 1969 introduction, it was the engine that drove Rolex’s Daytona from 1988 to 2000. This year the El Primero 36,000 VPH (that number refers to Vibrations Per Hour, and alludes to the movement’s accuracy) has a new anthracite dial with brushed “Geneva stripes”, and a perforated calfskin strap. The results are exceptionally sleek.

The thread is about this watch -- Luch 2609 2001 / 2013.


The significance of the watch is in that it is powered by the caliber Luch 2609 -- the only movement designed, developed and put into production (albeit for a very short time) after the dissolution of the USSR.

Unfortunately it is not in production anymore and was made only for a brief time so never got any chance of further improvement and/or modernization. It is rare because so few of them were made, especially compared to the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of other Soviet movements.

The Orient Star Open Heart Tonneau with reference number DAAA004W (or WZ0121DA in Japan) has a vertical cross-section barrel shaped casing seldom used by watch manufacturers due to a number of reasons. It has the classical aura of a formal timepiece which I find very appealing. This particular model was released back in April 2014.

Age must be getting to me. During the start of my watch collection hobby I was keened on dive or sports watches. Formal or dress wristwatches were seldom in my radar. However, in recent times, my interest in dress watches started to grow and I have been shifting my focus towards that genre ever since.

The Orient Star Open Heart Tonneau is a stainless steel construction with polished and brushed surfaces. It has mirror finished top surface and a matte finished side. It has a curved sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflection coating protecting the dial and a flat crystal glass as a display case-back. The case-back panel is attached to the watch casing via four screws. The signed push-in crown is located at 3 o’clock and the watch comes with a power reserve complication. It is powered by an automatic engine that can be manually wound. The wristwatch is paired with a black matte calf leather strap with crocodile embossing and signed buckle.

Welcome to the blog pages of Second Time Round, a Rolex dealer since 1985. As a family run business we thrive on our continued reputation for excellence and customer satisfaction. We were especially proud to be labelled as “The Largest British Dealer in second hand Rolex’s” by The Evening Standard. So given that this has been our speciality for more than 20 years I thought it would be appropriate to begin our news articles with a little background on Rolex watches themselves.

As a Rolex dealer it is out duty, nay our passion, to know all there is to know about these iconic timepieces. So first things first, I’ll bet you didn’t know that the original inventor of Rolex watches was neither a watchmaker or a Swiss? Hans Wilsdorf was in fact a German who, after working for a Swiss watch manufacturer, moved to London in 1905 to set up business with his brother in law, Alfred Davis. Their business was to actually import watches, in particular the movements from Switzerland and then place them into cases. These watches were then sold to jewellers for resale to the public. The name “Rolex” was not coined at the beginning of the venture, rather the back of the watch cases were engraved with a simple “W & D” which stood for “Wilsdorf and Davis”.

Around 1908 the name “Rolex” was registered as a trademark; apparently his reason for choosing the word is not entirely clear but there is speculation that it derived from the French phrase for “exquisite clockwork”, and that the word itself was pronounceable in many languages. Either way his choice gave us Rolex dealers a brand that has stood the test of time and is synonymous with quality timepieces.

You can read more about the background to Rolex watches on the history pages of our web site. In the meantime I am going to leave you with an anecdote which highlights the reliability of Rolex watches, and emphasises the reason why they are such a dependable and sought after brand for us Rolex dealers to deal in.

In 1996 a fisherman discovered a body in the English Channel. It had been anchored to the bottom of the sea via an anchor which was affixed to the victim’s belt. The victim had a Rolex watch around his wrist; a fact which greatly assisted in the arrest of the victim’s murderer. Through checking the serial number engraved to the back of the piece, and the various markings made at each service the police were able to name the victim.
